Evolution of ice skates – from bone to iron forms
Dorota Cyngot is an archeologist living in Poland and working in the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. She is interested in medieval skates including the ‘evolution from bone to iron forms’, as she has mentioned in the title of her article Evolution of ice skates – from bone to iron forms. The publication is written in the Polish language with a short summary in English. In Poland no medieval remains of bone or iron skates have been discovered, yet. She describes material from excavations in The Netherlands and in her bibliography several Dutch references are mentioned. She also pays attention to Lidwina of Schiedam, being the Saint Patron of Skaters, depicted with iron skates. According Dorota Cyngot’s opinion the medieval skate must be seen as a central part of daily live and she stresses the importance of interdisciplinary research.
